Introducing the #CultureUnderThreat Smart M.App

BY ROSALIE AZZATO  ON  SEPTEMBER 12, 2016                                                                                  HEXAGON SMART M.APPHXGN

The Antiquities Coalition dedicates their efforts to ending cultural racketeering, especially that committed by terrorist organizations. To help protect world heritage, they partnered with Hexagon Geospatial to create a map to visualize the destruction of cultural heritage sites across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This map is called the #CultureUnderThreat Smart M.App.

In Part 9 of the Keynote, Mladen talks about cultural attacks made on the Middle East and North Africa. He talks about terrorist organizations, such as Daesh, destroying history and looting historic sites to fund their terrorist operations. The Asia Society, Middle East Institute and Antiquities Coalition joined together to create a Culture Under Threat Task Force to counter threats to world heritage. In this video clip, we hear from members involved in creating the #CultureUnderThreat Smart M.App.

The #CultureUnderThreat Smart M.App

The #CultureUnderThreat Smart M.App is powered by Incident Analyzer from Hexagon Geospatial. It uses high-resolution satellite imagery to provide a graphical representation of where cultural crimes are committed in MENA. The Smart M.App presents a clear view of trends used to recognize patterns and understand when and where destruction has occurred. With this insight, the Antiquities Coalition can predict future activities of Daesh and other extremest groups.

Watch this video to learn about the #CultureUnderThreat Smart M.App and how it provides unique insights to the Antiquities Coalition. To explore the interactive Smart M.App for yourself, visit the Antiquities Coalition’s website.
