July 23, 2019
1:30 – 2:30 pm EDT
On July 23, 2019, Antiquities Coalition Executive Director Tess Davis will speak at an open session meeting of the Cultural Property Advisory Committee (CPAC) regarding a request by the Government of the Republic of El Salvador to extend the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the government of the United States of America and the government of the Republic of El Salvador concerning the imposition of import restrictions on certain categories of archaeological material from the prehispanic cultures of the Republic of El Salvador. Additionally, El Salvador has indicated its concern regarding the pillage of ecclesiastical ethnological material beginning in the Colonial Period.
To learn more about the importance of cultural MOUs such as the one to be discussed today, read the latest Antiquities Coalition Policy Note “Taking the First Step Toward Ending Illegal Antiquities Trafficking.” The Policy Note is by Larry Schwartz, former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Diplomacy, Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and Member of the Antiquities Coalition Advisory Council.
